Voluntary membership in the Employers' Mutual Insurance (MDE) allows the self-employed affiliated in Luxembourg to benefit from replacement income during the suspension of the CNS cash benefit. It also covers their affiliated assisting spouse; the latter cannot join alone.
The application is made to the CCSS. Introduced within three months of the start of mandatory affiliation, it can take effect from the beginning. For a self-employed person affiliated for more than three months, an application during the year takes effect on the following January 1st.
The MDE reimburses 80% of the contributory base during the relevant period of temporary incapacity; a medical certificate is required. This rate does not describe all covered leaves. A written termination, two successive unpaid installments, or disaffiliation can end the membership. Therefore, check its effective date before relying on this coverage.
